Between them, the Word Bearers and World Eaters, slaughtered billions in the Five Hundred Worlds, killing numerous planets such as Armatura and, eventually, Nuceria. The insidious effects of Chaos were quickly felt as nearly half the Planetary Defence Force of Armageddon unexpectedly went over to the invaders, declaring their loyalty to the Ruinous Powers of Chaos. They had made pacts with divine forces Horus still struggled to comprehend. He looked too deep, too long, into ideals the Emperor did not hold. Angron refused to recognise his brother's authority, and warned the Wolf King to depart before the situation became something that he would regret. Lorgar could be a daemonic Abaddon with the ability to use different gods' abilities while Perturabo could be a walking tank that responds to daemon buffs and can be a CSM HQ. ‎The Shadow Crusade has begun. Despite the tally of victories garnered by this brutal Space Marine Legion, it came at a dire cost. Once on Nuceria, Angron paid his respects to his fallen brothers and sisters amongst the Nucerian gladiators he had once fought beside, whose bones now lay exposed to the elements on the Desh'elika Ridge where they had died. The 5,000 Word Bearers of the Chapter of the Unspeaking under Lorgar's command who had followed their Dark Apostle Zardu Layak in his betrayal of Lorgar would continue to serve Horus and campaign with him on Terra. Lorgar strode to the centre of the gathering of Traitors. After their humiliation at Khur, thousands of World Bearers within the Legion detested the Ultramarines. Though the Primarch's lifespan and tactical acuity had been reduced by the implant, the Butcher's Nails amplified his combat effectiveness in other ways to compensate. The rebels had died to a man in his absence. As the two Primarchs fought, Guilliman landed a glancing blow, his fist pounding across Angron's breastplate. From the two primary bases of the Legion, Sicarus and the factory-world of Ghalmek which is located within the Maelstrom, the Word Bearers launch twisted Wars of Faith against the Imperium in the name of the Dark Gods. But he would struggle to bring their light to humanity. Blood painted them as surely as it marked Angron. Some of humanity's leaders could be lured to the service of the Chaos Gods by offers of ambition and dominance, while others like Magnus had to be manipulated until they were ready to witness and accept the truth. The only respite Angron had was in the pleasure he now received from the neurotransmitters which carried anger and aggression. The Imperial Heralds would become known instead as the "Word Bearers." What cannot now be doubted is that the Word Bearers who re-joined the Great Crusade after the razing of Monarchia no longer served the Emperor. With resolute clarity Lorgar realised that the Chaos Gods sought a symbiosis with life; a conjoining of the Ensouled and the Neverborn in natural harmony.
